In 1969, she quit the Panthers and quit high school, having previously attended Calumet High School and Kenwood High School (now Kenwood Academy). She started performing in small groups all over the Chicago area first performing in Cash McCall's band Lyfe which included her then-boyfriend Hassan Khan. Chaka and Hassan married in 1970.
